March Field Trip To Mt. Ida
March 9 - March 11
Our 2019 Spring break field trip will be to Mt. Ida, AR for quartz crystals, March 9th and 10th. Some of us are planning on heading over on Friday, March 8th.
I have called the Royal Oak Inn (870-867-2169) and have procured a group rate of $55.25 per room. I am not holding any rooms just yet, but if you get back to me, I will call and put your name on one. 4 rooms have one king bed, 4 rooms have one queen and one double, and 6 rooms upstairs have two double beds. If you are coming in late on Friday night, call them and they will put a key in your room, then you can settle up Saturday morning. Please be sure to call ahead, if you have booked a room and then cancel.
I’ve told the Royal Oak Inn that some of us may be staying over Sunday night also. I am planning to do the Diamond Mine on Monday, March 11th. If we have enough people, we may be able to book a group reservation for the Diamond State Park.

We will be collecting at the Twin Creek Mines, Collier Springs Rd, on Saturday, March 9th. Group rate will depend on how many we have. Standard rate is $25 per person, children 10 and under are $12, little ones are free. Mine is open from 9-4. Check out their FB page! 870-867-4945
We will be meeting at the Royal Oak Inn, Hwy 270 in Mt. Ida, AR at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 9th, before we go to the mine. We will caravan to the Twin Creek Mine. Twin Creek Mine is not far from Mt. Ida, off of Logan Gap Road and Collier Springs Rd. It can be a bit tricky to find.
Sunday we will be collecting at the Miller Mt. Jim Coleman Mine, off of Hwy 298, north of Lake Ouachita . It’s about an hour from Mt. Ida. Group rate will depend on how many we have. I was told that they have done some work to the road and parking area, as well as turned over the piles, so we should have some good collecting here. We will caravan from the Royal Oak Inn.
Directions to Miller Mountain:
From Mt. Ida…. (North) on Hwy 27. Go 11 miles. Turn Right on Hwy 298 (you can only turn right) go 18 miles to Miller Mtn. Mine sign at the top of a hill on the Right. Turn Right and follow signs up the mountain!
From Hot Springs….. On Hwy 70 take Exit 2 North. Follow the curvey road (Gulpha Gorge Rd.) about 1/2 mile until it dead ends at Rt. 7. Turn Right and go a few miles. Rt. 7 makes a left hand turn. Coleman’s Miller Mtn. Mine is located off of Hwy 298. Please do not use your navigation system! It will send you miles in the wrong direction! Follow the directions below & call if you have questions – 501-984-5328.
Please wear OLD clothes! I hear the red clay never gets out of what you wear in the mine. We will need lunch and water for Saturday and Sunday. Twin Creek Mine has a portalet and Miller Mt. has an outhouse.
There is a Dollar General, True Value Hardware and a grocery store in Mt. Ida, so we should be able to get a few provisions in town. Bring a hammer, chisel, safety glasses or some kind of eye protection, buckets, small three-pronged garden tool, gloves, screwdriver or other poking- probing tool, hat, sunscreen, handwipes, TP and paper towels and maybe newspapers to wrap some of the crystals, maybe even a backpack or fannypac and band aides!
